Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Landsbergis: “International organisations have a unique mission to end to the ever-increasing impunity of authoritarian regimes”

In New York, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Gabrielius Landsbergis met with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejčinović Burić.

“We appreciate the Council of Europe’s involvement in registering the damage caused to Ukraine and finding ways to help children kidnapped from Ukraine and forcibly deported to Russia. International organisations have a unique mission to end the ever-increasing impunity of authoritarian regimes,” Landsbergis said.

The meeting focused on cooperation between Lithuania and the Council of Europe and preparations for Lithuania’s Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe from May to November 2024.

Landsbergis also voiced concerns about the Russian staff still working in the organisation, although Russia is no longer a member of the Council of Europe. Lithuania’s Foreign Minister requested the Secretary General to address this issue immediately.
